Abstract: A Therapist Rated Scale of Post-Treatment Functioning

This preconference workshop presents our therapist-rated scale of current sexual offender functioning. The Therapist Rating Scale-2 (TRS-2) contains ten topics scored on two dimensions, namely, intellectual understanding of an issue, and acceptance of/demonstration of an internalization of change. Topics in this scale include interpersonal relationships, self-regulation, and other sexual offender criminogenic issues. The scale is both dynamic and positively phrased (i.e., strengths-based). We have found this scale useful for our clinical work as therapists, and as a method of improving the quality of our communication with parole boards, parole officers and subsequent treatment providers. Preliminary examination of the internal consistency, inter-rater reliability, and predictive ability of the TRS-2 suggest the scale has good psychometric properties. Workshop participants will learn of the psychometric properties of the TRS-2 and receive training in order to be able to score and interpret the measure in order to be able to use it in clinical settings.
